About Latino/a Studies at Duke
Latino/a Studies has existed at Duke for over ten years, with the first offering of an introductory course to our approved undergraduate certificate program in Spring 2009. The "Introduction to Latino/a Studies in the Global South" will be taught for the second time in Spring 2010 by the Faculty Director of the Program, Prof Antonio Viego. Our Postdoctoral Associate, Prof Monika Gosin, will be teaching "Latino/a Hip Hop: Representation and Resistance. The interdisciplinary certificate program allows students to expand on their knowledge of Latino/a communities in the United States by combining courses from across the humanities, social sciences, and professional schoosl. We also offer a variety of programming throughout the academic year, with events and guest speakers covering topics from politics to health to art, and everything in between. We continue our support of faculty and student-led events again in 2009-10, as well as support for conference attendance and research and teaching needs. Please join the listserv to keep up-to-date on events and happenings of interest, and come visit us on the 2nd floor of the Friedl Building (former Art Museum) on East Campus, where all our offices and Resource Room are located. The Resource Room, which is decorated with art and photography from local and national Latino/a artists, houses a significant collection of books, encyclopedias, and other materials, and is reservable for your use.
